A Stable Platform Directly Below The Task
Scissor lifts raise a guarded deck vertically above their chassis. They suit tasks where the machine can sit close to the work, such as lighting replacement, cable installation, ceiling work and maintenance of overhead services. A platform extension can improve access within its limits, but it does not turn a scissor lift into a boom.
For facilities managers, the deck area can be useful when the task involves several tools or bulky components. The rated capacity still includes everyone on the platform and everything they carry. Agree how parts will be brought up and removed, without storing loose materials where they block the gate or controls.
Electric Or Rough Terrain?
Electric scissor lifts are often considered for enclosed commercial buildings where exhaust emissions are unsuitable. Ask about non-marking tyres, battery charging needs and the surface the selected model can use. Check whether a power supply is available in the agreed parking position outside working hours.
Rough terrain machines may suit suitable external construction areas, but the name does not mean they can operate on any surface. Ground bearing capacity, permissible slope and the manufacturer's instructions remain decisive. Outdoor use also depends on the platform's wind rating, which may differ from its indoor rating.
Check Doors, Floors And Overhead Space
Measure the narrowest doorway on the delivery route and check the machine's stowed width and height. Include door closers, temporary screens, ramps and corners in a busy warehouse aisle. Some machines have folding guardrails, but any change to the machine must follow its instructions and the platform must be correctly restored before use.
Get reliable information about floor capacity where the route crosses suspended slabs, access covers or mezzanines. The load at a wheel or contact point matters, not just the machine's total mass. Ask a competent person to assess uncertain structural capacity before bringing equipment into the building.
Working Around An Occupied Site
Plan an exclusion area below the platform to control falling objects and pedestrian movement. Schools, offices and distribution buildings may need a temporary closure or a work window outside normal activity. Explain any restrictions on noise, dust, alarms or isolation of services when you enquire.
The lifting path must stay clear of beams, ducts and sprinkler pipework. An overhead obstruction can create an entrapment hazard even during a small movement. Brief the operator on the exact task and emergency lowering arrangements, and keep a suitable person available at ground level.
Booking And Comparing Costs
Send the postcode, required working height, proposed dates and whether the work is indoors or outdoors. Add the access dimensions, floor type, intended platform load and charging options. The supplier can then assess an appropriate machine rather than simply quoting whichever lift has the nearest height description.
Compare hire duration, transport, charging or fuel arrangements, collection terms and any damage waiver or insurance requirements. Ask how extensions are agreed if a fit-out programme moves. Record the agreed return condition and keep the machine in a secure parking position while it is waiting for collection.
Safety And Hire Responsibilities
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) cover suitable equipment, maintenance and adequate instruction. The Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER) also apply to relevant lifting equipment and operations. See the HSE work equipment overview and thorough examination guidance.
For people access, confirm a current thorough examination report as well as routine checks. HSE sets a six-month interval for equipment lifting people unless a competent person’s examination scheme specifies otherwise (HSE). A valid report does not replace daily checks or a safe system of work.
Scissor Lift Hire FAQs
Can A Scissor Lift Be Used Outside?
A scissor lift can be used outside only when the selected machine is rated for that environment and the site conditions meet its limits. Ask about wind rating, ground support and slope before booking. A machine intended only for indoor work must not be treated as suitable for an exposed yard.
Do I Need A Harness In A Scissor Lift?
Harness use in a scissor lift depends on the assessment, the manufacturer’s instructions and the task. Do not assume that a boom lift harness arrangement applies to every vertical platform. Confirm the required controls with a competent person and never attach equipment to an anchorage that the manufacturer has not approved for that purpose.
